The replacement is Kim Jun-hong - accompanied by a 'training partner', not a formal selection

Kim Joon-hong will fill the vacancy for Kim. However, Kim will assist his players through training partners, not by substitute selection.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) officially announced on the 22nd, "Kim Seung-gyu will be released from the call at 11 p.m. today and will return home on QR858. Upon returning home, he will undergo surgery and begin recovery and rehabilitation."

KFA then added, "Kim Joon-hong (Kim Chun Sang-mu), who has been called up to the national team for the European expedition in September and the domestic friendly A-match in October last year, was called as a practice partner due to the difficulty of training with two goalkeepers."

According to the KFA, although Kim Seung-gyu was injured, it is said that it is impossible to register as a substitute since the first match. Kim Jun-hong will be called up as a practice partner, not as a substitute. As he is not included in the list of players to participate in the event, he will not sit on a technical seat and watch the match from the stands on the day of the event.

The number of entries for the Asian Cup has increased to 26, and 23 players are registered in each match. The remaining three will sit on a technical sheet and watch the match, which means that Kim Joon-hong will sit on the bench because he is not included in the official list. Meanwhile, Kim Jun-hong will enter Doha on QR859 flight tomorrow to join the national team and train.

Earlier on the 19th, KFA said, "Kim Seung-gyu suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during today's training, and the cancellation of the Asian Cup was decided. Since the player's family is in the cart, the return schedule will be announced later."

Kim Seung-gyu is the main goalkeeper of the Klinsmann team. Kim Seung-gyu, who has been a starting goalkeeper since the days of former coach Paulo Bento, who led the Korean national team, was praised for his good foot skills, which are important for the build-up in the back, in addition to his ability to defend himself.

Since making his A-match debut in 2013, he has played 81 games so far. Cho Hyun-woo played as the main goalkeeper at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but Kim Seung-gyu defended the goal in all three group games and the round of 16 against Brazil at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Kim Seung-gyu also served as the goalkeeper in the first group match against Bahrain, which was the first Asian Cup match. However, due to his injury, he is no longer allowed to participate in the event.

The remaining resources are Cho Hyun-woo and Song Bum-keun. Among the two, Cho is ahead of the race to become a starting member. Cho has played in two matches since Klinsmann took over the team. Song has yet to play in the match. He faced Uruguay (lost 1-2) in March last year, and started full-time in the match against Vietnam (6-0 win) during the A-match period in October.

And in the second group match against Jordan last time, Cho Hyun-woo was selected as the starting goalkeeper. Cho Hyun-woo made a fatal pass miss, but he showed his unique ability to save.

Chances are high that Cho will continue to take the key post. However, since it is not easy to conduct training with two goalkeepers, the team decided to call in Kim Jun-hong to join the training. Kim Jun-hong served as a next-generation goalkeeper in 2003 after passing through Jeonbuk Hyundai, and is currently serving in the military in Gimcheon. He contributed to the semi-finals by serving as the starting goalkeeper of the U20 World Cup last year.

Kim Joon-hong, who was selected as the first player to be named the Clinsman during the A-match period in September, was also called up during the A match period in October. He has yet to make his A-match debut.
